Great and Little Houghton is a former mining village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, on the border with West Yorkshire; it is roundabout in the middle of Grimethorpe, Thurnscoe and Darfield, all former mining villages themselves.

Like most of the towns and villages around here, it is likely that the village was there long before mining started in the area; the village grew and prospered during the mining boom, but also suffered when the pits closed; an old railway used to serve the pits in the area, but nothing but a few remains are still visible.
